Do energy gels work?

Hi folks,

Some people are happy with a couple of bottles of water for a thrash around the trails with the Bigfoot ensemble. Others swear by PSP or some other powder supplement to keep the tank topped up. Whilst others still grab an isotonic drink in the middle of a race and almost pass out due to acute dehydration (too much sugar, not enough water). Do energy drinks, gels, protein supplements, golden shoes etc, really work? Or are they merely a placebo, drawing you into a false sense of recovery? Well, there's a Panorama investigation on telly tonight which might shed some light on that:

Thursday, BBC 1 8pm: Are you a believer?

Mike.

Pasties and Haribo work though, don't they? I think that's been scientifically proven (by, err, Ginsters and Haribo) Cool

Actually Andrew in my recent study of one. I recorded my quickest lap time at Bristol bikefest after an 800 calorie Morrisons pasty. I feel this is conclusive evidence and backs up your claim.

It's been fairly well documented that I ride for pies and have to vouch for their fantastic fuelling abilities! I have found in multi-sport events where running is involved they do repeat a little though! In those cases, it's perfectly acceptable to fall back on an emergency sausage roll.

That said, wait until Jason unleashes his hamper of fuels at the race! If there isn't something to everyone's taste in there I'd be amazed! Be it brioche rolls, pasties, gels, raw protein or the now infamous jar of cockles! And let's be honest, none of it seems to slow him down!

…well I think that settles it then – conclusive, peer reviewed, statistically relevant proof! Smile
