I think the first to go out here are the diet meal drinks – they don’t have many carbs and tend to be full of artificial sweetners and weird things to make them taste better (like veg oil!).

The body builders whey protein powder that you blend up with milk etc. is a good cost effective way of getting a protein hit but it’s a little light on carbs – and uses artificial sweetners again to keep the sugars low. I’ve sometimes added a banana to the blender to get a better balance of carbs and protein but it would be good if they weren’t so scared of carbs!

The biggest shake up (oh, dear) though is when you take a look at the cheapy Yazoo – remember it’s just ‘chocolate milkshake’. Compared to the For Goodness Shakes! it’s a little down on goodness but not my much – 330 vs 353 kcals, 15.1 vs 16.7 g protein and 52.4 vs 59.1 g carbohydrate. But take a look at the price – 53p! It’s under half the reccomended retail price of For Goodness Shakes! The ingredients are pretty similar too – the only thing it’s lacking is the extra vitamin’s and minerals. But if you neck a multivitamin pill at the same time you’ll get the same effect at a fraction of the price!

Overall victory currently goes then to Yazoo Chocolate Milk – just remember to splash out on some supermarket multi-vitamins and job’s a good’n.

Very interesting indeed. I personally have never tasted a Yazoo Shake but will make sure I pop one in the basket next time I hit the supermarket (provided there’s room of course after all the malt loaves which also need to be purchased).

Andy, have you thought about submitting all your results to STW and asking for a researcher’s fee?

There could be more to come yet, I’ve had a few more suggested now…
Frij are on special half price offer currently which makes ‘em tempting at the moment :-)

And malt loaf? Hmm, now there’s a whole new road test posibility!

Andy, big news – on my travels today to Redditch I stopped at Evesham Country Park for a drink from their Farm Shop and I purchased a chocolate ‘Crazy Shake’ – 88p. Very tasty ineed, not to heavy to drink and according to the bottle you need to ‘shake it like crazy’. Your research is clearly not over yet!

Oh my! So much milk and so little time ;-)

You’ll have to bring me them back from around the country!
