Well we had a great Bigfoot turn out for our first FOD Curry and Beer Ride, with 12 of us managing to make it.
I had dropped into the FOD last summer for a ride after work & discovered the curry night ride, lovin the atmosphere, post ride food & beer. On a visit in January I found out they still run the curry night on the last Thursday of the month all winter, no rice option though as not so busy & harder for them to gauge demand, so put this ride up.
The Pedalabikeaway Cafe was serving food until 8:30pm & open until 9pm. They recommend that you order & pay for your food before you start riding, so they can make sure enough food is cooked up. They had beef or chicken curry & chips available, priced at £6.25 or with a local cider, ale or soft drink at £8. I brought some bottled beer along as I am just a simple beer man myself & thought it would be a nice option for everyone.
I had set the ride start time for 6:30pm to give everyone time to get to the FOD from work, although this only gave us a 1 hour & 45 m ride time. We had a mixed pace group of red, blue & green riders, wanting to keep it social & inclusive, we decided to just ride the Freeminers trail as it is more natural, techy and with the extension now bedded in for winter riding, a longer option. With a few dry days in hand & quite a cold evening, we were hoping for less mud…
We all started together, but after the first section Simmo & Dave split to ride Verders as they thought the pace could be a bit high. Sorry boys, we were trying to keep it steady…. Freeminers was riding well & not to much mud to bog you down. We had frequent stops to let everyone regroup & have breather if needed & this gave Darren time to tell us of all the fantastic places he has rode. Fred’s chain broke, but was quickly repaired with a power link which Nick had not seen used before. Finale Steve had trouble railing corners to his usual standard, but later blamed this on a loose front wheel. Would have thought he would have noticed:) We finished the ride perfectly at 8:20pm, right on time for our well deserved post ride curry, chips & beer.
Must say how much we all enjoyed the social element at the end of the ride & I think we should do this more often. Timing rides is the problem, but when the nights draw out, we have the options of the DH trails & Worcester Lodge trails to ride. I also have ideas for post ride food & beer on our normal rides, will post these up later in the year.
The Dirty Dozen. Steve, Dan, Nick, Dom, Darren, Paul, William, Simon, Fred (Anthony), Mike, Simmo & David.
Thanks to all for a great ride.
