Easy Riders: The Gap ride

After consulting the met office and the weather witches we decided to go ahead with the ride. Could it be worse than Plymouth? No! The unbeatable Easy Riders were Squiz, DanW, SquizJ, Dan (who needed a new home after the Bontrager race was cancelled) and me. Squiz brought his brand new, multifunctional GPS (it even takes photos and sings) with two Gap routes on it and I took the book. The weather did not fail us. After a fast run along the canal we started the ascent on rubbley tracks. It was quite busy: lots of walkers used the break in the rain and ventured out. At one point we had a long discussion where to go and decided to follow the Bigfoot loop which led to some downhill fun followed by a steep road climb. The two Dans fought for Bigfoot pride by chasing and overtaking roadies. After that, rocky routes to the Gap. The sun was not shining but it was not cold, just right to do endless climbing. And then the descent. Unbelievably rocky and wet and loose. Right at the end, when all the difficult bits were done, I decided to do a Paul, but with less consequences ( I need a new helmet, and I have seen a nice one already). My left hand was weak after ground contact and I did the last 2 miles or so on road. Dan stayed with me and the others disappeared into the bushes. We all arrived at the car park happy that we braved the summer weather.  Brilliant ride, brilliant team.

We certainly made the most of the good weather. Great technical climbs, great views, some fun stuff. Somehow the tracks seemed a bit more bumpy than usual to me, especially the descent from the GAP. Had a good look at the bike when I got back and I found that the front suspension is bust. I guess the forks are well past their warranty. I’ll have a look into it, but I think they’ll need replacing. Me Sad

Thanks for asking Ed. I am fine. I look worse after sparring training.

We wish you were there too Paul. Since I didn’t see your crash I still find it hard to believe, and I find myself sometimes wondering, where’s that lazy git Paul got to… :-)
Anyway, bike is in Slam69 now for a full strip down service.
