Newport Velodrome Track Session – Sunday 13th May
So we had a 2 hour session booked at the Newport Velodrome last Sunday and though the turnout was below expected, two of us Bigfooters and an assortment of riders from Gloucester City, Climb on Bikes and Gloucester Rowing Club had a session on the track at Newport.
The session catered for a mixture of abilities and talents, and the coach Martin had us all working together, taking sprint laps and other track drills to hone our skills of riding on the track, riding in close formation and the ability to ride the track safely…..as well as getting a darn good work out to boot.
I was particular impressed by Oscar, a 14 year old Gloucester City CC rider, who had previous track experience, who was mixing it up with the rest of us…and again the girl peloton was showing their potential.
We have further track sessions booked, so if you are keen please let me know ASAP as demand was weak this time and we didn’t have enough riders to cover costs, so please come along for a try? The details of the next sessions are:
17th June – 9 am – 11 am
7th October – 10 am – 1 pm
4th November – 9 am – 12 pm
25th November – 4 pm – 6 pm
16th December – 10 am – 1 pm
13th January – 10 am – 1 pm
Now these sessions are open to ALL club members plus I will invite some of others we had last time. Steve Bonnici will be coaching us again and pushing us through our paces as well as getting novices up to speed. Novices i.e. those new to track riding are fine for these sessions. The Novices is basically a 2 x 30 minutes sessions in your own ground guided by the coach whom gets you understanding the bikes, the track and the do and don’ts, then you are mixed in with the rest to end the session. You’ll need you usual cycling kit including helmet and preferably fingerless gloves. Unless you ride a specific type of clip less pedals (ie. Look type) you’ll have to ride in trainers and use their toe clipped pedals. The bikes, just to clarify, and road style bikes with NO brakes and fixed wheel so you have to keep pedalling and have just one gear.
In terms of cost we need 18 riders to break even. The two hour session will be £10 and 3 hour £15. Hire track bikes are available at an additional £8 per session so all in all great value.
Anyhow here are a few pictures of people going around and around…

Nice one Jas, glad to see you sporting the new kit, looking good!
Looking forward to June session. Hope I’ve not forgotten what to do!
